Chapter Six

“Come on in.” Charlie held the door to the Campbell family house open for Emma. It was located close to the heart of Laconia. Large shade trees lined the yard close to the sidewalk and picket fence.

In the front hall, Emma stared in wonder at the handmade glass pieces that decorated almost every surface. Emma smiled to herself. So far, it wasn’t so different than the cabin, except for the size of the house, of course. The glass pieces seemed bigger too, pricier as well. How a cat did not break those was a mystery to Emma. Or maybe they did and Charlie used each break as an opportunity to change the decorations, perhaps?

As she moved further into the house Emma realized the atmosphere was warmer, more that of a true home.

Emma inspected the pictures on the walls, of Charlie, Charlie’s parents, Tom Campbell and Elvie’s wedding pictures, and many more.

“Sorry, I forgot this paperwork, but I really have to get it to the bank today. I was so sure I had it in the car.”

“No problem. It’s okay,” Emma said, still looking around the living room. “Gives me a chance to see your house.”

“Yeah. I still can’t believe you’ve never been here.”

“That’s what I get for dating a workaholic. I know the cabin and the factory by heart now.”

“That’s me.” Charlie smiled.

“And this gives me a chance to see all your cats at the same time.” Emma gestured at the playing or sleeping cats in the living room.

“It’s kinda rare actually. Kennedy often stays here. Butterfly tends to go too far on the property, so I keep him here most of the time, especially in winter, ’cause he gets sick easily with the cold.”

“So, the three little ones and Samurai are the only cats you take back and forth?”

“Most of the time, yes. Where I go, they go. Samurai needs his insulin shot mornings and evenings.”

“Right, I’d forgotten. A cat can get diabetes,” Emma said with a smile. “But cats aren’t dogs. I mean, how do you get them all in the car? It must be hard to round them up if they’re playing around on Shannon’s property.”

Charlie smiled. “Samurai doesn’t go outside usually. He eats and sleeps and stays close. The two little ones are very close to me most of the time. They go out but stay close. If I call, they come. Ellis is very easy to catch, or to fool, I should say.” She smiled. “Memphis is something else. When he wanders, he’s harder to catch, but I keep him in the cabin when it’s almost time to go. It’s a habit I’ve developed, I guess. And Lil’loo is the sweetest cat. She may not always want to go home, but she does anyway.”

“Yes, she is. And photogenic! There are a whole lot of pictures of her on the walls. Gosh, there are so many cats.”

“It’s not all her, actually.” The confusion on Emma’s face made Charlie smile. “Those, here, are pictures of Liloo.” Charlie spelled it before explaining.
